This is a rare pleasure. A lot of years ago I had a student who pulled out of my portfolio class. He was the only one who ever did that. Nice guy, didn't say much, seemed to have things going on. I believed it was a mistake to pull out from the class. I was wrong. And I'm glad. He had stuff to do. It was Colin.
I recently saw Colin, at Josh Longo's show in Soho. He's back in New York making things. I recently saw his site, and his work. Colin's recent art may be some of the finest paintings/drawings I've ever seen, anywhere. He is doing something important, changing the landscape and language of painting, and thinking, and being. There is a serious conversation in these beautiful works, questions about what is real, what is perception, and how much can we see or know about ourselves and everything else. Ryan Rutherford - brutherford.com - etc..

I am extrodinarily pleased to finally do a formal feature on Ryan Rutherford, (Pratt ID grad, 2001). I've kept up with Ryan over the years, and have presented him here, his blog, his iconic designs, awards, and so forth but never properly featured him in the rounded manner in which his work deserves.

Ryan is famous for his iconic design of the "CUZ" series dog toy. Most of us only dream about designing something like that, marketing like that, production like this!

I've been watching Ryan apply his production chops to his scuplture work over the years, and they payoff is now in - nearly in - with a growing series of production designed sculptures that are fantastic and destined to rule the design and sculpture world in no time. He's got his rotocaster working, his years.... I should just let him fill you in: Per a recent correspondence;

"brutherford industries (the website) will go live for sales hopefully before Christmas, I am actually heading to china for a few weeks so everything is going on pause until I get back. basically i have spent 10 years now working in design and manufacturing and I really thrive where the two overlap, I think I have a perspective on manufacturing that most designers don’t and vice versa.It’s really easy to get what you want in manufacturing as a designer if you understand the fine details of manufacturing… clearly there needs to be an understanding of materials but further it’s important to understand how molds are built, how your design affects the choice of machinery and to me the most important has become how you can design to be compassionate to the labor force that produces your product. On the flip side it’s important as a manufacturer to understand and care about why designers have made certain decisions and to know that there is always a discussion to be had about the value of any change that might be made and I find that if there is an open dialogue from the start of a project between designer and manufacturer that things usually work out the best. anyway… why am I rambling and telling you all of this?

Because that has led me to where I am now, I want to MAKE stuff… beautiful stuff, fun stuff.

I’ve been collecting machinery from tech schools and boarded up mold shops and assembled my own home-brew, punk-rock factory and I have a huge network of existing manufacturers that I know and trust both abroad and domestic. I really don’t know how to describe what I am doing but I think the current overview is that brutherford industries is going to be a collection of fun stuff that I am making and selling, sometimes made in my own facility (mostly made in my own facility to start) sometimes outsourced to people with better systems and machinery than I currently have. I have piles of my own designs, 7 of which are at a stage where the only thing left to do is build molds and then inventory plus I have a list of people lined up who want me to produce their goods. Each of my initial launches will be paired with some graphic element designed by one of a few amazing artist and designers I know, maybe it’s just packaging or a limited edition print. I think the unifying theme is that it’s going to be stuff that I think is fun or witty in some way and as much as possible produced in the US and with the most efficient systems as possible. I won’t claim that only domestic manufacturing, certified non toxic, recycled, post consumer… whatever is acceptable because I think those issues are far deeper than most people understand. But I will be conscious of every decision I make and material or process I choose. I’m not sure of my end goal or how big I hope to grow this… maybe this is the beginning of my EMPIRE!!!"

I do believe in this Empire. Ryan graduated the same year with Josh Longo, and they are looking to collaborate - combining forces, leashing their empires! So damned great!!

In addition to the great success of his commercial designs, sculptures, blog-world, and new website - (stay tuned for the launch) Ryan notes his development of mechanical processes - tooling and machining designs that allow for production of hitherto never-before-seen methods of fabrication and tooling - (potential confidentiality and intellectual property rights prevent me from noting specifics)!!

And to finish up, between the cars, the costumes, and the observations in his blog, Ryan has been keeping me on my toes with envy and admiration! Congratulations for the dawn of a new empire!

Longoland at Cappellini for Pictoplasma NYC!

As most of you know, we lose Steph to the west coast. She moves with Jason to San Franciso.
She notes in a recent email;
Jason was offered a one year teaching position at Ringling School of Art and Design (Teaching Jr. animation and game art student character and environment design) He was offered the position on a Friday and expected to be there the following Saturday- a happy girlfriend i was not. About a week before he was offered the job I got a call from a head hunter regarding a job in San Francisco. Within 3 weeks I flew out and had an offer for the Sr.Packaging Engineer position that was open. The offer was pretty impressive and the job is right in line with what i want-design heavy- but still building on the technical manufacturing skills that ive gained at L'Oreal. I'm super excited to leave NJ and move back to a city. Leaving my family will be the hardest part...

She notes some of her L'Oreal projects will launch shortly and will update with some of the print ads for the blog. Check out her sketches, they are supreme. She is a master with a pencil, and has talent just bursting in every direction! Those folks are in for a tremendous wave of good fortue! Congrats on the move!

Been Away, Getting Back

Been away for a big move, new digs, new studio, home, change of landscape.
Gotta catch up: Seen many of you doing many things and will have to past-post updates.

I've seen that Jude's got a restaurant he designed up in press, Kimberly's got followers I'm bumping into on the street and has more press, Pat has moved west into more fertile furniture design territory, Chen is doing some super work and if you didn't see the Noho Design week show, Greg, Chen, Ian, Kai, Matt, Sergio, presented - after having participated in the MAD series "On the Home Front".

Natalie is busy in New Orleans with more shows, Josh is doing the Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair, and a whole bunch of you are doing other things I haven't had time to write about but will, especially if you drop me a line to remind me!

Team In Training® - Brief Overview

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training program (TNT) is the largest endurance sports training program in the world. Since 1988, when the first team was formed, the program has helped 420,000 people achieve their dream of completing a marathon, half marathon, triathlon or 100-mile century ride. More importantly, TNT participants have raised over $1 billion on behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society®. We are proud to see how far we have grown and how many lives we have changed.

Each TNT participant competes in tribute to a local blood cancer patient, called an Honored Teammate. TNT athletes often claim that their Honored Teammates provide them with the inspiration and motivation needed to finish a race. Participants may also choose a family member who has been affected by a blood cancer. It helps participants realize the importance of the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

TNT participants come from all walks of life – from novice to seasoned athletes. An experienced coach leads participants through a comprehensive four to six month training program designed to suit each individual’s physical goals and abilities. Participants are trained for optimum personal performance and receive sound advice on form and technique, race and ride strategies, equipment, injury prevention and nutrition. Participants gain a sense of camaraderie by training with their team members and working together to achieve both their fundraising and training goals. Each new member receives guidance from their TNT Mentor, who is a past participant available to offer additional support.

Each TNT participant is required to reach a fundraising goal determined by the event in which they choose to participate. The Society provides participants the various tools, strategies and support needed to attain their fundraising goals. In addition to the training, TNT members receive round-trip airfare to the event destination, hotel room (based on double occupancy), race entry, tickets to event weekend parties, race day apparel and other TNT goodies in return for their fundraising.

DESIGN SHOWCASE 2010
This month’s Apartment Therapy Meetup filled the Knoll showroom to capacity with the return of one of Apartment Therapy’s favorite guests — Jonathan Adler! To start off the evening, we had a twist on the usual “warm up band” — three designers had five minutes to present their product to the group; at the end of all three presentations, audience “cheers” declared the evening’s winner. The one to receive the loudest “votes” for his/her idea will receive special mention on Apartment Therapy this month. Mentions on Apartment Therapy are far-reaching (last month’s presentation of Jeremy Pickett’s BRANN Pendant Lights was picked up by Martha Stewart’s team, who asked to feature Jeremy’s pendant lights in next month’s issue!) so this opportunity is a great one for all aspiring designers. Ana Linares presented her Duo Bookshelf, inspired by Calatrava’s work, light sculptures, and various forms of bent and scored paper. The bookshelf appears to float on the wall, with only two points touching the books. Ana’s chair was selected this year by Design Within Reach for their annual M+D+F competition.

Greg Buntain and Ian Collings, founders of Fort Standard shared an email as follows: Please assist in their search, and give'em a hand moving for cryin out loud! They write:

"Hello Friends-

My apologies for the impersonal mass email but Fort Standard needs an intern/employee asap. Two would be even better.
Ian and I are gearing up for a project at the Museum of Art and Design in April as well as exhibiting new work in three or four different venues during Design Week in May. I have attached some press releases of some recent work which you can feel free to forward to anyone who may be interested.

We need someone who can think on their feet, is efficient in a wood shop and preferably knows Solid Works and CS5. Our shop is located in Red Hook so they either need a car or a bicycle and some motivation as there is not a lot of public transportation (we do have Fairway and great views of Lady Liberty however). They would also need a license and be able to drive our luxury cargo van.
We could easily keep someone busy with just production work but would prefer to have someone who can grow with us and be a team player. We cant afford to pay much at the moment but can offer incredible letters of recommendation and can negotiate terms of compensation based upon their levels of skill and commitment. Working hours can be flexible as we tend to work 18 hour days so anything to lighten the load would be appreciated.

I quote directly from a correspondence we had this afternoon -

"In July 2010, designer Kevin McElroy gamely participated in NYDesigns’ inaugural Laser Party!, a live laser-cutting demonstration set against the backdrop of a boozy social. NYDesigns, a program of the City University of New York, is a community space and design entrepreneurship incubator for creative professionals. McElroy's design concept for the Laser Party!, an abstract geometric pattern cut from t-shirt fabric, garnered particular interest at the event, and he reached out to friend Jesse Finkelstein of JF & Son. JF & Son, an international fashion design group specializing in innovative materials and fashion-forward clothing, was the ideal collaborator. The three parties schemed and embarked on an enterprise culminating in a line of clothing and accessories laser cut to surprising effects.

This project is an exploration in material, process and context. I asked the question, "What will one machine do that no other machine will do? What is a singular expression of that utility?" A laser-cutter uses light to slice flat materials along precise contours sent from a computer. Using light both as a tool and inspiration, arrangements of shapes were cut away from fabric, from leather to silks. Removed from the bed of the machine, the fabric flows and drapes and these flat cut graphics take on a more textured dynamic as negative and positive spaces move and layer over one another. Using this as a vehicle for communication, the collection is a collaboration on ideas of aesthetic, function and culture."

Eli Simon, if you are following his blog, you have seen some of his lates fabulous ceramic works. Eli is currently planning his post-grad career after RISD, he notes:
"Also I'm teaching a lot and writing my thesis. I would love to send it to you when I have a good draft. The work I've been doing is essentially a lead in to the thesis body. I will send you info regarding the RISD thesis show, which is large to say the least, when it gets closer."

And regarding the Dazzle Ships works, as quoted from the show:
"Dazzle Ships is the collision of a primordial material in an industrial framework. Using basic geometric typology as a backdrop for fantasy, I use the notion of Genetic Engineering as the ultimate metaphor for the future fiction. It asks us to dispense with our essential nature/identity for something perceived as better. In an industrialized context better equates to uniform. Therefore, in the same way that Genetic Engineering invades and applies order at the point of human inception, my work invades industrial process at the point of form generation and leaves a human hand print, like graffiti on mechanized notions of 'progress'. Protracting the void between the hand and the machine allows me to exist and create in a space that is referential of industrial capability but free from the confines of uniformity and repetition.

She has worked with the Macy’s Merchandising Group, designing print and patterns for their private tableware and Frango candy lines for their Fall ‘08 season and Valentine’s Day ‘09. Since 2008 she has been working for Estée Lauder Companies at Clinique, creating packaging, patterned makeup bags, and custom compacts that are sold at Clinique counters worldwide.

In addition to the companies listed, Kimberly has sold her original line of handmade felt applique pillows at craft fairs around NYC, including Brooklyn Renagade and the Brooklyn Flea. ana linares - Book Publications; 1000 Designs for the Garden

Ana Linares has some terrific news about her Conversation chair, a chair she designed (if I am no misaken) during her undergrad term at Pratt.

I want to share some news with you. One of my first designs the Conversation Chair, which was selected for exhibition by Tom Dixon for 100%Design London, has been included in a book coming out on Monday published in London called 1000 Designs for the Garden. I'm so happy!!

Ana is so busy, I cannot seem to keep up with her doings; in December she wrote a response to my request for an update, and I haven't had a chance to follow up, but here it is, in her own words:

Since we last spoke I was with Mark (Goetz), wow time flies! I actually worked with Mark for about 6 months till I finished the project I was doing for him, then I worked at Quirky for a short freelance, about two months and then Knoll needed help with a project, so I was there till the beginning of December...I've been busy working, thankfully...and my bookshelf is selling well too. Umbra is developing a new idea of the shelf, hopefully will be produced (crossing my fingers), and I just started last week a full time position at Material ConneXion, as a material specialist. I am doing research and design consultancy, really interesting.
Pratt contacted me for an article that they will be writing for the next Prattfolio issue related to materials, since I am working there I guess they want to take advantage of that.

Apartment Therapy will be posting something on the event with Jonathan Adler soon, I will fwd you the link once is up.

We are very proud of your success, vim and vigor!! I look forward to hearing about the Apartment Therapy link!

Jon Basile, (grad 2006) one of the finest designers I have had the pleasure of knowing - a designer's designer and magician of transformative concept of as still undefined proportions - slightly elusive in space, time and being (hard to get a feature on) has been in touch recently living in Portland, and wrote, in part, as follows:

"Portland has treated me well the past few years. I moved out here for the lifestyle change, art/culture, awareness, locality, geography, and craftspeople.

I've been working and playing a ton! I try to be a weekend warrior and do at least a hike, climb, or ski in the winter. I live on a farm/vineyard with my girlfriend. We grow our own food and have some animals, I have a lot of space to build and create! It's a enchanting escape from the city.

I'v been working at, The Rebuilding Center(in N Portland), designing and building furniture, home decor, and custom work for locals and businesses. It's a non-profit organization driven by local used building materials. So some of the fine things i build are made from hand-reclaimed old-growth doug fir! As well as other reclaimed materials i find in the huge warehouse of reusable building materials. I also coordinate classes/workshops in my shop for the community. Like "how to" workshops.

Right now I'm working on designing and installing a display in the showroom space in the store. It's fun I have a lot of design and material freedom. I have a great shop/studio/tools to work with and in a great neighborhood downtown Portland.

I've also been drawing, painting, and building outside of work. Designing building stuff for the local wineries and restaurants .

I am very happy to have Conie Chiock join us (grad pratt ID 06) with her new website PotatoRooster - super! and news about a new degree in mechanical engineering!
Conie moved back to Texas after graduating and is working as an art teacher with children at Katy-Visual-and-Performing-Arts-Center

She has very astutely combined her education talent, her arts & crafts talent and tied them to her idustrial design education and developed a new and intriguing resource named PotatoRooster
This is a new site, check it out - lend Conie your support, assistance and advice if you have any - I think it's a great look and a great idea and it seems to me that it fills a perfect niche for an expanding market and the potential seems limitless.

But enough of my words: Conie writes elegantly enough;
"The whole idea behind potatorooster was to develop a small design consultancy that focused on children design. From interior, to interactive, to custom furniture, to graphics.

My friend says that it is the master mind creation of an Industrial Designer, Teacher, and Engineer. For me it was just a way of being able to keep my artistic flair and adapting to my new environments upon moving to Texas! I moved to Texas, had a difficult time getting a design a job & has been teaching art & am currently working on my masters for mechanical engineering (and) in the spare time I enjoy consulting and helping people design things for their children.

The few products I have I want to market them with the idea of modern craft. The plush animals are handmade and each one of a kind. The way I have been doing them is on a custom order basis, the parent gives me a piece of clothing or blanket from their child and I turn it into a plush for them to keep.

Another custom product that has been pretty popular is the creation of graphic silhouettes, parents send in the side profile of their child and I create a graphic silhouette. The duckie bank is an original concept and design that I self cast and fire in my studio. The magnetic board concept targets a bit of an educational field, and the idea of being artistic in a 2d Media. I offer different boards one that has a body to play dress up, one that has a race track and comes with magnetic cars, and another one that comes with organic and geometric shapes for more free play!"

I am very happy to post this feature for Isaac Lubow (Pratt ID 2006) who has been very busy over the past few years getting into everything, everywhere in the design world, and across the planet we live on.

His website features the short modest note: "Isaac Lubow studied drawing at The Art Students League and industrial design at Pratt Institute. He was the recipient of the Taki Fuji International Art Award.

New York Magazine named his firm, Custom Resource, third in a list of eleven designers creating "the next garde".

" Longoland was recently asked to design monsters by VCCP (ad agency)
for o2 (Euro Telecommunications). The monsters represent tariffs that the phone
companies impose on you, Flat-Rate, High Price, etc... There will be TV commercials, online ads, instore displays,
all covered in Longoland monsters, but only in Germany as of right now. Longoland is super excited to see his monsters

Pat has been very busy as a furniture designer for KI; His Sela Lounge chair sold over 2 million units the first year! He has been working on a very beautiful furniture system, and has immersed himself as a serious player in the international world of Furniture design! Letting him speak:

"i am doing well, still working at KI. i was just at neocon, the office system i have been designing for the past 2 years was finally released this year. it was very well received. it is still a work in progress. i am coming out with a line of break pressed sheet metal parts to accompany the system, as well as some aluminum extrusions. it is safe to i am learning an amazing amount.
I recently redesigned my Serenity screen divider and a woman in florida purchased it- took 4 years to make a sale, but i did it!
the Sela lounge collection i designed for KI last year has sold over 2 million in sales in the first year, and is on the way to becoming the highest selling lounge chair at KI.
I ran into Tim Richardz at neocon, gave him a tour of our showroom and all the products in it. it was good show him ive made it full circle, and toned it down a bit haha.
i went to dinner with Jeff weber the other night at neocon, the codesign of the Aeron and Embody chair. i cant say enough positive things about him and in the short time ive known him what ive learned. that's an experience i never thought i would have, actually all of this is in one way or another. and it's all thanks to you, Tim and the rest of my professors at Pratt, so thank you for giving me the tools i needed to get to where i am and where im headed. "

Miron Lior (www.mironlior.com) has stormed the world of design in 2007 upon graduation from PRATT Institute. His first product on the market, The Conceal Shelf produced by Umbra, debuted at ICFF in 2006 and became a hit, won several awards and garnered international acclaim. In 2008 Miron opened his own studio, focusing on product design while maintaining the capacity to create custom furniture and objects.

Miron's designs can be described as Expressive Minimalist, notable for the elegant balance he achieves between form and function, while keeping his pieces exciting and engaging. The work reflects his continuing interest in the interchange between design and contemporary culture, as well as his belief in the importance of sustainable design practice.

Miron’s designs reflect his international background. Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia, Miron has lived and studied in Israel and the United States. His studies have touched upon fields as diverse as Information Technologies and Engineering, Cultures of the Far East and Art History. After trying his hand in the more technical professions, he found his path to self-expression and fulfillment in furniture and product design. Miron was awarded several international honors for various designs, and his work has been carried by galleries and museums such as the MOMA and MAD Museum. Miron now lives and works in New York. He is also a professional DJ.

An update in brief form about Josh Longo,

Josh notes that he is very very busy on a new and exciting project to develop Characters for a European company that wants them for commercial application, and has already designed the lot of them, and has agreed on licensing terms (know you know who to ask) and is now negotiating expanded rights for other countries!
In fact, they liked the characters so much, they want merchandising rights!

And, you may well know, Josh is teaching at Pratt, and will be having a solo show in Antwerp this fall - so his marvelous creature career is blossoming, and the longoland landscape is growing on target, as we all knew it would!

And don't forget to check the site: the muscle paintings are fantastic; one here as header - see it! Super! Congratulations Josh!!

It is thin, white, curvy and dynamic... Such objects of sculptural beauty, evident yet strange all at once; we don't see many like this in each year. What is the reason for reinventing the sewing machine in such a way? Brian Kang, a 27 year old New York designer, unknown as of yet, explains that he wanted to give the tool a form that expresses more than just its function: not only the art of sewing, but the pleasure of creation as well. All in all, he has tightly tailored a dress to her figure. They don't make them like this at Singer, or elsewhere... It is a prototype that is not yet on the market, but according to its creator, it could be in production. Is it a stroke of genius to happen once, or the birth of a great tailor of design? We are impatiently waiting for the first industrially produced objects signed 'Kang' to hit the market.

For now, you just flip the vase over and display his single rose. Aww, bet that’ll make him feel special."

I AM AN IMPORTANT GIANT
Call for Submissions

I Am An Important Giant will be a collaborative group installation piece that will open to the public on November 13th 2010 in the Saint Claude Arts District in New Orleans. Using scale to create the effect of importance on the viewer, the works in I Am An Important Giant will be smaller than life installations.

Organized by visual artist Natalie McLaurin the exhibition will explore the importance of scale and the habit of equating scale with quality in art works.

A group installation piece. The basic idea is to make the viewer feel more important using scale. This past year Natalie has been working smaller because of moving, not having a studio and shipping work to out of state shows. It made her think about scale and that the importance of art is frequently equated with its scale.

She is using the Antenna Gallery (http://www.press-street.com/antenna), in the bywater area (http://www.scadnola.com/) of New Orleans. The show will be up from November 13 to December 5th 2010. This show is a part/satellite of Prospect 1.5, the New Orleans art show (http://www.prospectneworleans.org/p1_5.html). The idea is that this will become a biennial between the international biennial (http://www.prospectneworleans.org/).

The work should be doll house scale, 1:12, so that doll house furniture can be used to help the illusion of largeness. Of course if you have something that doesn't fall with in this scale already made you should send a picture with its scale. This is a chance to make something that full scale isn't possible for you because of time, money or, space. You might gain some understanding about how important scale is or isn't to your work.

The gallery will be set up like the viewer is walking through a canyon so the work will be closer to eye level. Please feel free to pitch in any ideas about how to handle the space, the sky, or ground. I Am An Important Giant is above and beyond all else a collaboration, the more minds pitch in the better! If an artist would like to take on a larger aspect of the space, such as the layout or design, proposals will be accepted.

ID alum is very proud to present Kimberly Lewis - (2008 grad) a very dedicated and very professional young designer who is working happily in NYC, and I'll just copy her note directly, there is no improving upon it;

"After I graduated from Pratt in '08 I freelanced at Macy's for one summer working on print and patterns for their private line tableware. It surprises a lot of people but I got my fulltime job through the Pratt show! My current supervisor and boss at Clinique (both also pratt alum) went to the professionals night and noticed my pattern work and industrial design background. I got offered a fulltime job at Clinique in Sept 08 working on their Gift with Purchase program which is basically all of the stuff that they give away when you purchase $XX amount of product at our counter. I work on hard goods such as compacts, mirrors and accessories but my real passion is designing the prints for the makeup bags.

I love working with print and pattern so much that I am actually in the process of starting my own line of wallpaper (with a twist!) and I will keep you updated but I am not ready to reveal quite yet! It is all on the side of my fulltime job so things are slow but I have started to work with a manufacturer and it is really exciting!

Chen Chen - "Lift, Hold, Roll"

The Future Perfect holding an ICFF show called Lift Hold Roll. The concept is based around three mechanical products that are essential to the process. These three objects are a pulley, a clamp, and a caster. The idea is to utilize any one of these objects in a project.

Kegan Fisher (grad 2007) joins us, officially, here at IDalum and I am very proud to have her on the roster. You should already know what Kegan is up to, if you don't you're asleep at the wheel. She is co-founder of Design Glut, with Liz Kinnmark, another towering Pratt ID force. Design Glut is a very hot I.D. and styles resource that not only identifies what is happening and who is doing what, but it has become a portal for Kegan and Liz to generate new projects, programs and associations related to design and the promotion of design.
Kegan also has her own website Kegan Fisher which is in the process of a terrific expansion - check it out.
I have already posted a link through a feature-add of Ana Linares, the Design Glut curated ICFF show "Uncomfortable Conversations" .
Kegan has produced products, jewelry, as well as props, and so many numerous items and alliances is is impossible to list. Her products are featured in print, in press, and online; the Design Glut force is a powerhouse. I will feature more of this creative explosion as this blog moves forward. For now, I congratulate her on her vision, direction, and talent!

An update for Greg and his ongoing newest venture; as Creative Dirctor of "Tenet",
a lovely "lifestyle pop-up store" in Aspen Colorado, which as noted in the new york times magazine blog
Additionally, Greg has linked other ID alum with this project; Ian Collings, and Bernardo Guillermo & jude heslin-di leo, of Bear and Lion. All, by the way, from Brooklyn NY!
I copy the press release just issued to me by Greg as follows:

CONCEPT SUMMARY
TENET seizes the opportunity to bring premium fashion to an underserved men’s market in the celebrated skiing and shopping town of Aspen, Colorado. Offering both established and emerging labels, founders Jesse Warren and Josh Warren set out to open a lifestyle pop-up store for the high season. TENET’s doors are now open and will bring an elevated aesthetic to Aspen through mid-April.
LOCATION AND STORE
The 1300 sq. ft. space is in one of the most prestigious locations on S. Galena Street - neighboring Prada, Burberry, Polo, Gucci, Dior and Moncler. Designed and built out by owners and friends, the shop features 14-foot ceilings, exposed brick walls and whitewashed wood floors. Some of the store’s highlights include a white birch which is suspended horizontally from the ceiling along the center of the
store, a one-off burlap wrapped chandelier, mirrors framed with salvaged wooden banisters from Brooklyn and custom clothing racks made from industrial copper piping with cast brass fittings. In addition to men’s clothing (outlined below), TENET is selling lifestyle items like a mint condition 1989 Honda GB 500 Cafe Racer motorcycle, vintage cross country skis, snowshoes and a currated selection
of limited edition contemporary furniture. The 800 sq. ft. basement serves as a stock room and temporary studio space for Creative Director Gregory Buntain, who will be using the space to work on projects exclusively for TENET.
BRANDS
TENET carries a focused mix of downtown New York brands mixed with classic American heritage to cater to the haute mountain lifestyle. The store sells clothing by A.P.C., Rag and Bone, Apolis, Gitman Bros. Vintage, By Robert James, KRANE, Unis, Rogues Gallery, Isaora, Etiquita Negra, By Robert James, Patrick Dunaway and COTO along with bags and outerwear from Fjallraven, luggage and winter
gear from Filson and 1000 mile boots from Wolverine. Apart from menswear, the boutique carries select designers for women including Helmut Lang, Bodkin, Generation Love, and Adrienne Landau. Wes is an exceptional theorist, a visionary with space and details, and the man you want to execute a drawing of anything (see samples on his site).

And we have Miron Lior (grad 07) who has been busy building a design empire from the year before he graduated with his accomplished and innovative shelf for Umbra, and now a continuation of that line - but I will let him tell you what he's been doing:
"I'm working on so many things at once now. First of all, I am preparing a whole new furniture collection to launch at ICFF'10. Ab 30 pieces. Under name FAKTURA design. None of it is on my portfolio page. There will be another site fakturadesign.com that will feature the collection probably in a month or two. I am sending you images of two pieces from this collection. One magazine table and one console table. BTW, pictures are taken by Luke Escamilla and pieces are fabricated with help of Lenin Hercules. I will not have more images until the photo shoot that will take place in beginning of April.

Also, I launched www.giftofdesign.com online gift store about 6 months ago. The idea is that I will offer at this site my own designs, products of my fellow designers and other products that I like. If you want you can issue a call to others to contact me if they have products that would be a good mach for the site. Store features will designed objects in the price range $20 - $100. The site is just gaining steam and more people need to know about the site for it be where I want it to be. Advertising is very expensive these days and sales are down everywhere, but I have patience. I got a really good response over the Holiday season. I like the site because it is a representation of my taste in design.

I decided to stay in Brooklyn after graduation. I tried working for design firms, but quickly understood that I'm not enjoying office atmosphere and better off designing independently. I produced several pieces that are on sale at VOOS. I took my S -table to an exhibition in Cologne and sold it to a gallery there. I exhibited Z - shelf at ICFF'08.

Conceal shelf is still going strong and after 4 years on sale it is actually selling more every year. It was featured in most design magazines and sold over half a million pieces in my estimation."

Kai Williams (grad 2006) joins the IDalum blog! I am very very happy to report that Kai has been extremely active in the design/fabrication business and is the co-owner of a brooklyn based design/fabrication house named, Three Phase Studio LLC.
I have created a link to his site in the alum link section and have here a number of images which correspond to the descriptions he notes here, that I've copied below.

I am very pleased that I am able to post a link to this business and hope that all of you take advantage of Three Phase as a resource for your prototype and design fabrication needs - check out some of this work, and look at Kai's recent history and experience - phenomenal! I expect that Kai will soon explode onto the design scene with a mastery of fabrication tech. tied to his lightning hot sense of adventure, and show us things about our world we never thought possible!!

"After I graduated Pratt I bounced around for a bit eventually getting a job as a freelance model builder for architectural models and then as an intern for 2x4, a graphic design company in the city. After that I became an assistant for Tom Sachs, an artist, eventually becoming his personal assistant. In the spring of '08 I left to start my own shop with David Messineo, a former Pratt student, though not a graduate. We do a combination of wood work and metalwork mostly for artists and architects. Our largest tool is our router which is about 26,000lbs large and allows us to compete with larger shops and really provide some of the longest dimension cnc work in New York."

"Images 6812 and 6813 are some tests for bracelets that I made, most of them out of some scrap HDPE that we got after machining a table for an artist.
6839 and 6842 are two shots of something of which I am really proud. Basically is is a sold walnut rolling rack for a clothing store on the lower east side.
Pictures 4 and 5 are from a airless air hockey set that I made in collaboration with a friend for a show at a store called pavilion in Chicago."

It is my great pleasure (balloons, streamers, confetti) to bring Dana Young (grad 2005) into the fold of the IDalum blog!
I'd lost her for a while, but she found the blog, and as I was certain of long ago, has used her whimsical vision, her spanking-hot sense of nyc fashion, and her very grounded business head to bring her to a very happy place as a senior jewelry designer, monster-maker, illustrator, and musician. as she notes;
"I am currently a senior designer at a small jewelry company in midtown. I've been through a lot of jobs since we last talked, but they all propelled me really far forward which is great. This one has only been for about 7 months, but they have me lined up for the head designer position come summer. I'm pretty much already the acting head designer without the title, which I like."
and "I doing jewelry for JC Penny, Dillards, Arden B, Bebe" and others.

REQUEST FOR ALUM / STUDENT DESIGNS

This post is to request Pratt ID alum and current Pratt students to submit images of furniture designs that use only one (1) single material in an innovative matter.
The submission request has been made by a Pratt Alum, who will use the image collections as part of a proposal for the curation of a design show for I.C.F.F.
This is not a competition, nor is it a call for entries or submissions to a established show, that may come if the preliminary samples help win the curatorial position.
Remember; furniture, one single material, innovative manner.
Please assist us with this proposal, please copy ID alum, Pratt students, and faculty who can pass this on to other students.
I don't have a schedule/deadline as of yet, so ASAP would be best.

additonal links and IDNY update

There are now a few additional links under associates, friends, and good eggs. Some personal gestures and a few networking items that are good resources;

IDNY meetup; Zach Feltoon just spoke at this month's meetup and it is a very good resource social/design network organization. There were numerous Pratt ID alum there from a spread of years. It is free to join and meets once a month, but the website is also a good platform to communicate issues, features and other info for your business, etc. By the way, Zac did a terrific job and it is obvious he is becoming a force in the local design culture.

The Brooklyn Arts Council is a very good local resource for designers/artists. There is a register so you can post your business link info and update the daily posts with any feature info you might want to share. This posting has various opportunities such as calls for entries for fine art and design among other things.

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce (and any other local Chamber of Commerce) is always a good resource for business opportunities in the area. You can become a member or simply sign up for the monthly news letter, or visit the site. If you have a business, the chamber is a good idea for joining. I noticed that Bernardo of Bear and Lion is a member if I remember correctly.

I will add to this list when I have a chance.

Na Suen 2007 grad, has been gracious enough to maintain her contact with me since she entered the professional world. Na has tenaciously encouraged and honed her sculptural priorities as she investigates all avenues in the world of design.

It is a pleasure to report (see the full documentation on her Coroflot site noted in the website section on this blog) that Na has applied her talents as an intern at Watchcraft, a Junior Prod. designer at Mila, a freelance tabletop designer (you know she loves tabletop - her last email to me notes, "Yes, I'm very happy! I wanted to focus on tabletop once I took Irv Tepper's ceramic class and didn't know there exists jobs that let people do solely that!") for the Shaeffer Group, and is now with the in-house design team for Sears/Kmart first designing dinnerware, and now as she notes, "I am designing patterns, fashion bedding, rugs, window treatments, etc."

Na's process, her primacy in analysing concept through abstract/3D forms, she hopes (and we know), will continue to keep her sensibility finely poised between art and design, thus offering her a special vantage, out of the mainstream, even when designing for the mainstream.

Here you will find a couple of her recent projects, and a couple of images from the DKNY design project done while in Pratt. Check her work/profile on coroflot, it will all make you smile!

David Wright and Zach Feltoon, 2008 grads, collaborating in their own design consultancy as "DavidZachary", will be breaking out their website in a matter of days. Their Brooklyn based business is promoting the wonderful and broad talents both designers have readily displayed for us. Their site (I was lucky enough to get a glimpse) and their work, will knock you down and then stand you back up again.
The clarity and sophistication imbued in the designs of these collaborators is powerful.
We all wish the both of you well in your growing vision!

stepping up the ID alum blog

After a few weeks and fair amount of success with this blog, I've decided to open the settings for comments so that anyone may put in comment line.
I urge all Alum (and others) to follow this blog, visit frequently, and submit comments that might be useful for networking, contacts, vendors, potential clients, etc.
As the blog's feature-designers list grows, I am being contacted by more alum, and have other resources/contacts that have noted their appreciation of the design work found here.
There is a great breadth of design talent already displayed here and I am working on bringing outside vendors/shops/designers into this forum.
My hope is that this blog may be a hub for display of your craft, a base for contacts/resources for future projects, and a living map of the growth of all the Alum that I have been proud of for so many years.

Erin Bradt; Is also in New Hampshire working as a designer for Timberland and she notes that she is, "Just getting her new project out to market - (the) Yele Haiti project with Wyclef Jean- They are earth keeper boots that are made with silver rated tannery leather (tanneries that meet a certain standard for the their chemical processes, and waste managment) and canvas that is made from organicly ground cotton, and rubber that is made from recycled tires- they came out pretty cool and have been pretty popular! (see attached)I am also being sent to the factory in the Dominican Republic next week to work with the factory..."
And, by the way Erin is also excited to be working part time in a french cooking school, and is active in pursuing her freelance work - perhaps more to come on that soon. Please see the image of the Yele haiti project posted here.

Been in contact with Gnat Mclaurin grad 05, she's been very busy lately, noting in her last email the other day;
"I left brooklyn this summer and went to north carolina, florida, tn, new orleans, austin, tulsa, new mexico, arizona, san fransico and portland oregon. then I came back to nyc for 3 weeks to work at the guggenheim as a exhibit fabricator and then I moved to new orleans late september . I worked there last fall as an art preparator for prospect one and I fell in love with the city. I am doing some random work and getting involved with any art projects that come my way."
She's been busy as an art preparator, fabricator, and has been making soft sculpture.She is also a member of the BD Art Collective in Brooklyn, NY. I have copied her blog gnatawho.blogspot.com on this site, and she is working on a website. I look forward to hearing about her adventures in New Orleans!

Another 08 grad exploding on the local design scene; Kevin McElroy has been developing his steadiness, practicality, and innate talent for shaping simplicity into elegant designs on many levels since he's graduated from Pratt ID. The beauty of the Urbano Wastebasket, the second iteration of Urb Flat, his industrial crating, Medical equipment and the simply romantic "Rocket Toss", a swing on lawn darts for Regent Sports, are just a few examples of this talented designer's flexibility, curiosity, and attention to detail. Please see his website link for all the lovely details, awards, shows, associations, press, and the promise for his future designs. He is also part of the Pratt Design Incubator, where he and Sam Cochran have been working on the fantastic "solar ivy" project which has caused quite a stir in every field of art and design. Of this he noted:
"As for me, I have been freelance consulting a lot and working with the Pratt Design Incubator as well. We recently were part of a discussion panel at the World Usability Day Conference at SVA."

The ever-energetic and upbeat Steph Intelisano and I have been in contact with fair regularity since her graduation in 07. Her design identity has strenghtened as she notes below, and her fine art habit grows and grows! She notes:

By day I am a packaging engineer for L’Oreal Paris and Maybelline cosmetics. After work I enjoy using watercolors, my lead holder, and those refillable Japanese ink pens. I go location painting weather permitting, otherwise I attend figure drawing in Hoboken weekly. Ive also dabbled in figurative sculpture and plan on starting slipcasting at this Jersey City studio in January.

I am trying to get some packaging images from Steph to post, and while she does not yet have a website, she has just locked in blogspot address; http://hibernationhibernation.blogspot.com/ and is working on getting all those great works posted. I look forward to seeing them.

This blog is dedicated to all the industrial design students, instructors, professors and practicing designers who have dared to take action, promote dreams, and leap with faith into the wealth of the future.

I hope this forum helps keep the talent fingertip to fingertip. I believe it will, there has been a sounding; so many of you have been searching and finding and making and then coming back and sharing. My own work, ideas and dreams are more substantial, have more depth, profundity and joy because of it. I believe that everyone who shares here will agree.

I ask that you gather and share. Please help find your peers: there are those of you who touch base regularly, occassionally, infrequently, and others who orbit at great distances and send messages at wide intervals; I am grateful. For those we have lost, misplaced... if you can direct contact to this blog for those alum, associates, friends that have lost touch with me directly, but remain in touch with you, please send them here.
